Advent 3
John the Baptist was a signpost to Jesus. When John’s ministry was censored, and he was in prison, he kept hearing rumours about his cousin Jesus. Was he the promised Messiah? How could he be sure? So he sent messengers to find out.
And Jesus replies to the messengers with another question, asking them about what they have witnessed for themselves. So, they report to John the astonishing transformation Jesus has brought to people’s lives. It was as the prophets said:
“the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.”
As we prepare our homes and our hearts for Christmas let’s all try to be more like John. Let’s be human signposts to Jesus —the real reason for it all.
